As employment insurance benefits run out, many individuals and families need to access food, shelter, and other services and supports for the first time. Poverty in our city continues to shift to the suburbs, where unemployed parents are unable to pay their mortgage and feed their families while they look for work.

Domestic Violence

With the economic downturn, domestic violence rates have risen across all communities as people experience increased stress with job losses, financial instability, and shifting family dynamics. In Alberta, women are disproportionately impacted by family violence—80% of victims of spousal violence are women. Two-thirds of women entering women’s shelters also have children with them.

Kids' Mental Health

Many local children and youth face difficulties as they struggle with mental illness, confidence, and making social connections. When mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder aren’t addressed, it can lead to serious repercussions, such as bullying, suicidal thoughts and attempts, and health issues. Our children and youth face mental health stressors like these on a daily basis – and these experiences can stay with them well into adulthood.
